Cardiff Met goes first. The official moving-in party lands on Sunday 20 September, the Freshers' Fayre is on the Wednesday at NIAC on the Cyncoed campus from half ten, and the rest of the week runs through District, the Philharmonic and Barbara's Bier Haus on a roughly £20 wristband. USW opens enrolment on 14 September with teaching from the 21st, and its Cardiff base is the ATRiuM in the city centre. Cardiff University comes last: the Students' Union fairs run 28 September to 2 October, tickets are sold individually rather than as a wristband, and the SU is fairly blunt about third parties selling "official" ones that are not.

Dressing for a Cardiff September
September in Cardiff averages 18°C by day and 10°C at night, with rain on around fifteen days of the month and 91mm of it in total. That gap between four in the afternoon and two in the morning is what catches people out, and it is why whatever you packed at home rarely survives the first week in Cathays.
The answer is layers you can carry rather than a coat you cannot. A denim or bomber jacket over a long-sleeved top handles a fair, a queue and a walk back. A proper winter coat in the third week of September is a thing you leave in a cloakroom and forget about, or worse, a thing you carry all night.
Daytime: fairs, enrolment and the walk into town
A freshers' fair is a couple of hours standing on a hard floor collecting things you did not ask for, and the walk from Cathays into town is about twenty minutes at a normal pace. Both facts point the same way. Jeans that are not brand new, trainers you have already worn in, and a bag that goes across the body so your hands are free for the free stuff.
This is the least interesting part of the wardrobe and the part that gets worn the most, which is easy to forget when the entire budget goes on the going-out half.
Nights out: Y Plas, District and the walk home
Cardiff's student nightlife is compact, which is a gift. Y Plas is the Students' Union's own club and the home of YOLO; Met's week runs largely through District; the Philharmonic and the Bier Haus fill in around them. Most of it sits within twenty minutes of most student housing, and that walk is the thing your outfit has to survive.
So: a mini dress works, because it is one decision and it does not need a coat argument. Black is the sensible base for a first week when you do not yet know which venues have a cloakroom and which have a shelf. If you would rather not do black, that is a taste call rather than a mistake. Just pick a colour you are happy to see in every photograph from that week.
The bag matters more than people expect. Cloakroom provision varies a lot between Cardiff venues, and queueing for one at 2am is nobody's plan, so a small crossbody that stays on you all night takes the question away. Phone, card, keys. Nothing you would cry about losing.
Shoes are the other thing worth thinking about before you get there. Cardiff student housing sits mostly in Cathays and Roath, which means the end of the night is a walk rather than a taxi for a lot of people, usually in a group and usually not in a straight line. Heels are fine if you own the kind you can actually walk in. If you do not, a flat boot or a trainer with a going-out dress is not a compromise, it is just what most of the room will be wearing.
The in-between: flat pres, society socials and 9am seminars
Most of freshers is not the club. It is sitting on somebody's kitchen floor at half nine, going to a taster session for a sport you will not continue, and turning up to an induction lecture on four hours' sleep. That middle register is where a good jumper earns its place: over a dress with tights, over jeans, over pyjamas on the way to Tesco.
Buy one you actually like the colour of rather than a neutral you chose because it goes with everything. It will be in the background of a hundred photographs.

Break in the shoes at home
Whatever you plan to walk back from town in, wear it for a full day in September before you leave. A blister on the Tuesday of freshers week costs you the rest of it.
Own one jacket that handles rain
Not a winter coat. Something you can shove in a tote when the sun comes out at three and put back on at eleven. Cardiff sees rain on roughly half the days in September, so this earns its place faster than anything else you pack.
Do not pack for the whole year
Student wardrobes are small and shared drying space is smaller. Bring September and October, and let someone bring the winter half at reading week.
Leave room for the society hoodie
You will join something and it will have merch. Everyone ends up wearing it constantly. Plan the shelf space rather than pretending it will not happen.
