The Back-to-Uni Capsule: 8 Pieces That Do Everything

Halls have limited wardrobe space and you will be doing your own washing for the first time. Those two facts should decide what you pack, and mostly they don't.

The mistake is packing for the version of yourself who goes out four nights a week. You'll wear the same six things on rotation by week three, so the smart move is choosing which six. Here are eight that between them cover a 9am, a library day, a night out and a walk back across a wet campus.

“A capsule isn't about owning less. It's about owning things that don't need a plan.”

    The two denim shapes

One mid-blue straight leg and one black. That's the whole denim conversation for a term. Blue does daytime and black does evening with almost no effort, and neither shows a week of wear.

The bits that get worn every single day

Trainers and a bag do more work at university than anything else you own, and they're the two people most often cheap out on. A leather trainer survives a wet campus in a way canvas does not. A crossbody bag means you can carry a laptop and still have both hands, which matters at eleven at night more than it sounds.

The eight, in order of how often you will wear them

    01

    Straight-leg blue jeans

The default. Buy the pair that fits at the waist and get them taken up if you have to.

    02

    Black jeans

Everything the blue pair does, but they pass for going out. This is the piece that saves you packing a separate 'night out' wardrobe.

    03

    A crew neck jumper

Grey, black or burgundy. Over a shirt, over a tee, over a dress, on its own in a cold seminar room.

    04

    A denim jacket

The layer for September and again for May. It goes over the knit when it turns.

    05

    Leather trainers

You will walk further than you expect. Canvas dies in October.

    06

    A crossbody bag

Closes properly, holds a laptop, leaves your hands free.

    07

    One black skirt or dress

For the formal, the birthday dinner, the interview you didn't plan for. One is enough, but you do need the one.

    08

    A proper coat

Not a fashion jacket. The thing that means you still go out in November.

Seven of those eight are things you'll wear in week one. The coat you'll resent buying in September and be grateful for by half term.

Prices and stock on all of this shift week to week, so treat anything you like as a now-or-never.
