It happens every summer. You pack for three different versions of yourself, sit on the case to shut it, then wear the same two things all week. A capsule sorts it out. Fewer pieces, chosen so they all go together, and getting dressed stops being a decision you have to make.

“The best holiday wardrobe is the one you barely have to think about.”

Pack on a system, not a whim

It is a small change in how you pack. Parts, not outfits. One colour family, mostly neutral, every top sitting happily with every bottom. Ten pieces will see you through a fortnight and nobody clocks the repeats.

    The packing rules worth keeping

    01

    Three tops to one bottom

Tops are light and they change a look faster than anything else. Three per bottom is the ratio that earns its space.

    02

    One colour story

Pick a base, sand or navy, and keep everything near it. When the case coordinates with itself, you could get dressed with the lights off.

    03

    Earn its place twice

Nothing makes the cut unless it earns its place twice. A linen dress that's a beach cover-up at noon and a dinner dress at eight, with a sandal and a gold hoop, counts as two.

    04

    Three pairs of shoes

A flat sandal, one pair for dinner, a trainer for the airport. Shoes are the heaviest thing in the case, so three is the ceiling.

    The ten pieces

The backbone looks like this: a linen dress, a slip dress, a kaftan, a swimsuit, wide-leg trousers, two easy tops, tailored shorts, a flat sandal, a heeled sandal, and a bag you can grab without thinking. Colours are yours to choose, and better still if one of the ten is second-hand, something with a bit of history that isn't off the same shelf as everyone else's capsule. Keep the shapes loose and the fabrics breathable and you're set.

    The hard-working ten

    Build it by moment

The same ten pieces carry across the whole day. Pool in the morning, lunch, a late dinner. Here's roughly how they split.

    A palette that travels

Build on warm neutrals with a soft accent or two. It all photographs well and nothing clashes in the case.

    Butter Yellow

Do the work once and the holiday itself gets simpler. That is the whole appeal.
