Notting Hill Carnival Style 2026, and How to Wear It All Autumn

Carnival turned 60 this year. Two million people, a bank holiday weekend with west London shut to traffic, and the best-dressed crowd in the country, none of whom booked a stylist. It rained on the Sunday and nobody went home.

What the crowd wore, and what the bands wore

People conflate the two and they are not the same thing. The mas bands spend months on their costumes: wire-bending, beading, feather work, a theme per band. Caribbean Sessions built theirs on Greek mythology this year, Mangrove carried puppets honouring Carnival legends, and Paraiso School of Samba brought the Brazilian bloco energy to the Monday. None of that is available in a size 12.

The shoppable half is everything the other two million wore standing next to it: a mini dress, a cropped top, denim shorts cut short enough to walk five miles in, a flag knotted round the shoulders. Practical, loud, and put together by people who knew they would be on their feet from J'ouvert at 6am.

Why nobody wears black to Carnival

At 3pm on both days the sound systems cut out for 72 seconds, one for each life lost at Grenfell a few streets from the route, and the crowd stood still. Then it started again, louder. Carnival has always carried both of those things at once, which is why the colour is doing a job rather than decorating one.

So head-to-toe black looks like a shrug here, whatever it does everywhere else. The shorthand: pick one colour that is genuinely loud and let the rest of the outfit be plain. A co-ord takes even that decision off your hands.

Earrings do more work than the dress

Go through any Carnival photo set and the jewellery is what you notice: big gold hoops, resin, beads, something that catches at head height in a crowd where nobody can see below the shoulders anyway. It is also the cheapest way into the palette. A £12 pair of oversized hoops changes a plain vest more than a new dress would.

Shoes are the one thing you can get wrong

Eight hours upright, two million people, wet pavements by Sunday afternoon. The rule is boring and it is the right rule: flat, closed, and a pair you have already broken in. Nobody is looking down. Everybody notices the person limping back to the Tube at six.

How to wear it once September starts

The weekend is over. The colour does not have to be. Everything above transfers into autumn with one change: swap bare legs for denim and put a jacket over the top. A sequin cami under a denim jacket with jeans is a Tuesday outfit rather than a costume, and it is the easiest way to keep a bright wardrobe in circulation past August.
