A few episodes into the new series of The Celebrity Traitors (BBC One, filmed at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands), the Maya Jama conversation has mostly been about coats. A source told The Sun they "have got everyone talking", and for once I'd agree with a tabloid source.
A Highland castle is a hard brief. Most of us would hear it and reach for a fleece. Maya has treated it as an excuse to wear the most dramatic outerwear she can find, then kept everything underneath plain enough that the coat gets the room to itself.
That second half is the bit worth stealing, and you don't need a Saint Laurent budget to do it. Below are four looks from the first three episodes, each with a rail of similar pieces underneath.

Maya Jama's Celebrity Traitors looks, episode by episode

The shiny Saint Laurent trench
Her arrival look was a Saint Laurent double-breasted belted shell trench (£2,570 at Net-a-Porter), and in this shot it's doing everything a trench usually doesn't. The fabric is glossy, almost metallic khaki. The belt is pulled tight and the collar is knotted up at the throat like a scarf. Against dark panelling and church pews it reads more period drama than commute. The useful bit is the knot: tying a trench at the neck as well as the waist changes its whole shape, and it works on the one already hanging in your hall. A belted khaki trench gets you most of the way there; a coated or faux-leather finish gets you the shine.

The plain basics under Maya's coats
Underneath, Maya has kept things almost boring: white T-shirts, a pale blue shirt, light-wash jeans. I think that's on purpose, and it's why the coats land. When the outerwear is loud, the rest of the outfit can stay out of its way.
How to borrow Maya Jama's castle style
Pick the coat first
Every look here has one loud piece. Choose the outerwear, then dress down from there.
Knot the trench at the neck
Free, takes ten seconds, and gives a classic trench an actual silhouette.
Size for the shoulders
Most of her outerwear is cut wide across the shoulder. If you're between sizes on a blazer or jacket, the bigger one gets you closer.
Keep the hair simple
Her hair is sleek and straight in all four looks. With that much coat going on, anything fussier would compete.
The series airs on Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One, so there are more coats to come. The trench is the easiest place to start, since you might already own one. High-street outerwear prices and stock move fast at this time of year, so if one of these catches your eye, don't sit on it.
