M&S sells two kinds of Christmas knit: a few jumpers with a pun across the chest, and a lot of Fair Isle that still looks right in February. Here's which to buy, which pyjamas are worth it and what you should pay. Prices are from our catalogue on 2 November, and they do move.
M&S Christmas jumpers: which to buy
Buy the Fair Isle. The Star Fair Isle jumper with wool (£38) and the cream cable-knit version (£36) look festive in December and like normal knitwear by January, and that second life is the only reason to spend this much on a Christmas jumper.
The slogan knits are the fun ones. Fab Yule Ous is a fitted red jumper at £22, and Fizz the Season comes in black at £26. Buy one if there's a party where it'll get a laugh, and don't pay more than that for a pun.
If you'd rather have a plain jumper you'll wear for years, the pure merino crew neck is £36 and the lambswool blend is £38. M&S also has a pure cashmere argyle at £130, which is a present for someone you like a lot.
M&S Christmas pyjamas: what to pay
The Christmas sets ran from £20 to £32 when we checked. Start with Spencer Bear, a burgundy stripe with the bear on it. At £20 it's the cheapest Christmas set in the range, and it's the one I'd buy. The dark green printed pure cotton set is £22.
The red checked Christmas set is £32. M&S sells these as matching family sets, so if you're doing the photo this year, start here and check everyone's sizes before you commit.
The wider pyjama range went from £7.50 to £40, with most around £25. Leave the £40 muslin set for now, since muslin is a summer fabric and this is a Christmas shop.
M&S slippers to go with them
Suede moccasins and mules lined with faux fur make up most of the range, at about £22 to £30 for those styles. Across every slipper we found, prices started at £9.60.
How to choose at M&S
Wear Fair Isle over a shirt
M&S's own shots put the red Star jumper over a denim shirt. Copy it for the office and you've turned the Christmas down a notch.
Split a pyjama set
Christmas-print bottoms with an old white T-shirt still count, and the top can sit out until next year.
Spend on one knit
£44 buys two Fab Yule Ous jumpers, or the Star Fair Isle with £6 left over. I'd take the Fair Isle every time, because it's the one you'll still be wearing after New Year.
Christmas stock sells through and prices change, so check your size is still there before you get attached.
