Alessandra Ambrosio has walked twenty Victoria's Secret shows, and off the runway she keeps going back to jeans and a decent jumper. That sounds boring until you look at the photos, because each outfit has one thing doing the work: a jacket, a loud knit, a hat. You can copy that without a model's budget or a model's legs. Here are five real outings, from 2013 to last month, what she wore on each, and what to buy if you like it.

Alessandra Ambrosio's five off-duty outfits

Leather jacket, white tee, faded jeans
Backstage at her 20th Victoria's Secret show, under a giant foil 20, she was dressed for a coffee run: dark leather biker jacket, cropped white T-shirt, long faded jeans. The jeans are Mother's The Reifler in After Midnight ($268, according to Who What Wear), a straight leg with a slight kick and the sort of whiskering that makes new denim look ten years old. Wear the jacket a little boxy and the jeans long enough to break over your shoes. The formula is so old it has stopped being a look, which I suspect is why she likes it.

What Alessandra Ambrosio's outfits have in common
Jeans turn up in four of the five, and her shoes are almost always flat or close to it: trainers, slip-ons, a low wedge boot. None of this is hard to shop. What I would take from her is the habit of repeating a formula until it belongs to you, and then changing one thing, whether that is a hat, a jumper in a colour you would normally avoid, or a very large bag.
How to make Alessandra Ambrosio's style yours
Choose your one loud thing
A chevron knit or a felt hat, and only one of them at a time. Everything else can stay plain.
Buy jeans for the wash
Her denim is usually faded or very dark, rarely anywhere in between. If you find a wash you love, you can forgive a lot on the fit, and a tailor can fix the length.
Go big on the bag
Her tote in 2013 looks more current than the jeans it was carried with.
Second-hand counts
Old jeans and a worn-in leather jacket are exactly the point of this look, so start in your own wardrobe or a charity shop before you buy new.
