Hotter Boots, and Which Pair Survives a British Winter

Hotter is not a brand anyone buys for the drama. It is the one you end up on when you have spent a winter in boots that leaked, rubbed or both, and you have decided to stop doing that. The range rewards a bit of reading, because two things in it are genuinely hard to find elsewhere.

“Most brands make a boot and then try to make it comfortable. This one goes the other way round.”

    Where Hotter came from

Thomas and Harriet Houlgrave started the business in Lancashire in 1959, making slippers under the name Beaconsfield Footwear. Hotter as we know it arrived in 1992, when their son Stewart took the hidden comfort bits of a slipper and put them inside a proper shoe. Shock-absorbing soles, padded heels, leather uppers.

It has been made in Lancashire ever since, and that nearly stopped being true. Hotter went into administration and was bought by WoolOvers in July 2023, and the new owner then tore up a plan to wind the Skelmersdale factory down. It has since said it wants UK output up towards a million pairs a year. Whether that lands or not, it tells you where the brand thinks its value is.

Which is the useful thing to know about the range. Hotter is designing around the foot first, and the look second, and you can see that in every product name.

How the wide and extra-wide fits work

Around half the women's boots Hotter lists with us come in a wide or extra-wide fit, and each width is a separate product under the same style name. So the Bramley, the Whisper and the Ludlow each exist in more than one width rather than just more than one size. Very little else on the high street does this at anything like that scale.

If you have been sizing up to get width, stop. A size up gives you length you do not need and a heel that slips out with every step. A wide fit in your actual size gives you volume across the foot and keeps the back of the boot where it belongs. It is a genuinely different last, not a roomier size.

The waterproof ones are the winter answer

A smaller part of the range is built for weather rather than pavements. Gore-Tex linings, lugged soles, the sort of boot that takes a muddy walk and then a pub. Look for Gore-Tex, GTX or waterproof in the product name, because that is where the actual engineering is. The rest of the range is leather boots for dry days and they will behave like leather boots for dry days, however sturdy they look in the photo.

How to keep them from looking sensible

    01

    Show the ankle

Crop or raw-hem the jean so it stops above the boot line. Denim pooling over the top of a flat boot is what makes the whole thing look like a compromise you made in the rain.

    02

    Go tan

Black flat boots disappear into being a uniform. Tan and chocolate do more work, and they sit properly with denim, cream knitwear and the wall of brown currently in every shop.

    03

    Put volume above them

These are quiet boots and they are better for it. A long coat or a full skirt gives them something to anchor. Styled against something slim and equally quiet they can go a bit flat.

The same boot, across other brands

Hotter sits between about £45 and £150 here, most of it around £90. Put that next to what M&S, Clarks, Lotus and Pavers are asking for a comparable flat ankle boot and you can see exactly what the width range and the sole are costing you.

One thing to be honest about: a Hotter boot will not turn heads. That is the trade. You are buying a foot that still works at the end of a long day in January, and if that is genuinely not what you want from a boot, the money is better spent elsewhere.
