On 18 October, Kylie Jenner walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show at Sony Pictures Studios in a bra made of 4,410 diamonds and nothing else. No fabric. Jacob & Co. built it around a 75-carat yellow diamond, it weighs just under four pounds, and the brand put a $50 million price on it. She's the first person who isn't a VS Angel to wear a Fantasy Bra, and it's the first one on the runway in eight years. The internet had opinions. Shoppers had a different question: can I wear a bra as a top this weekend?
Yes. You've been able to for a while. The SS26 runways in Milan and Paris sent out bras as statement tops and sheer slips under cropped jackets, and Kylie has been wearing the idea for real since long before she had wings on. Below are three of her looks, each one a different version of lingerie as outerwear, and the high-street way to do them. None of them needs diamonds.

The diamond bra
Look past the price tag and it's a very wearable shape: a plunging, cupped bra with a fringe of crystal drops along the hem and the yellow stone hanging like a pendant. Kylie wore it with a sheer white micro skirt, sparkling knickers, clear heels and the wings, and VS chief creative officer Adam Selman said they cast her because she "extends beyond fashion, beyond culture, beyond TV, beyond one singular thing". The night-out version is a silver embellished crop top or bralet-style top, cut to sit on the bust like a bra rather than a vest. Keep everything below it plain: black trousers or a white mini. If a bra top is too much: the lace cami and the sheer layer
Not every night out wants a bare midriff. The lace-trim satin cami is the version of this trend that's been on the high street for years for a reason: it's a slip, basically, worn as a top, and it works under a blazer or on its own with jeans. The other route is to keep the bra top and put a sheer mesh long-sleeve over it, which is what the runway did and what Kylie did on a date night in April (sheer black tank, bra underneath, low-rise trousers). You get the look without the exposure.
How to wear lingerie as outerwear without it looking like underwear
Fabric decides whether it reads as a top
Leather, sequins, structured satin and heavy lace look like clothes. Thin jersey and soft cotton look like a bra. Kylie's three looks are diamonds, boned couture and leather. None of them is a sports bra.
Bare one zone only
Bra top up top means trousers or a long skirt below. Corset dress means arms and a bit of leg, not both. Her VS look broke this rule on purpose, which is why it had wings.
Carry the jacket, don't wear it
A leather jacket over the arm is the trick in the West Hollywood photo. You have cover for the walk in and the walk out, and the bra top stays the outfit in between.
Match the tone to the underwear
A nude corset dress needs nude, seamless everything underneath, or nothing visible at all. Black on black is forgiving. White on white is not, so check in daylight.
Skip the wings
Diamond fringe, pearl chokers and sheer micro skirts are runway props. On a Saturday night, one of them is plenty.
Worth it or skip it
Worth it, with one caveat. The bra-as-top has come and gone before, and it's back now because the corset dress and the leather bandeau make it wearable rather than brave. Buy the version with structure, keep the rest of the outfit quiet, and ignore anyone pricing it in carats. Stock and prices move fast on this stuff. If one of the rails above has your size tonight, don't sit on it.
