Cardiff Castle spends most of the year being a castle. For one Saturday in July it is a field with a stage in it. Depot In The Castle came back to the Castle Green on 25 July with The Wombats headlining and Sugababes as special guests, plus Red Rum Club, Ben Ellis, Afro Cluster and The Family Battenberg under them. Doors at midday. Curfew at half ten.
Ten and a half hours. On grass. Under a Welsh sky that nobody thought to consult.

The brief: midday to 10:30pm, on grass
Two problems, and they pull in opposite directions. At two in the afternoon the Castle Green has almost no shade and the sun just sits on it. By nine the light's gone off the lawn, the stone has stopped giving heat back, and everyone who dressed for the afternoon is standing very still with their arms folded.
This is the family-friendly one on the Castle programme. All ages, under-18s with an adult, and no prams or carts on site, so whatever you bring you're carrying on your body from midday onwards. Plenty of people made a full day of it (there was a £60 combo ticket pairing it with the Welsh Fire down at Sophia Gardens), which is a different proposition from a night out that happens to start early.
The bill also splits the field in half. The Wombats bring people who were fifteen in 2007 and still dress like it, deliberately: black jeans, a band tee that has been washed two hundred times. Sugababes bring the Y2K side, low-slung denim and hoops the size of a side plate. Same lawn, same ten hours, two completely different reference points, and nobody is wrong.
Worth remembering where the Castle actually is, too. This is Castle Street, in the middle of town, not a field forty minutes down a lane. You walk in past the shops and you walk back out through a Saturday night city centre, which is a genuine argument for an outfit you would be happy standing in a chip queue on St Mary Street wearing. Wellies make no sense here. Neither does anything you would only wear behind a fence.
Three ways to dress the Castle Green
Pick a formula rather than an outfit. Each of these handles the temperature swing differently, and each one survives being sat down on grass.
The baby tee is the Sugababes answer and a better one than it looks, because a fitted short-sleeve top is the only thing that works layered and unlayered without changing shape. Denim shorts are the indie answer and the least interesting choice on paper, so the interesting part has to happen above the waist. The midi is for anyone who wants to decide once at ten in the morning and never think about it again. It covers your legs when you sit on damp grass and takes a jacket over the top without bunching.
Shoes: what survives ten hours on a lawn
Grass swallows a heel. It swallows a wedge and a block heel too, which people forget, because the sinking happens slowly enough that you blame your feet instead of the ground. Flat and closed, and already broken in. Wear the pair you already know at hour eight, not the pair you bought for this.
The layer you'll want by nine o'clock
This is the piece that decides whether you watch the headline set or spend it thinking about the walk back to the car. Build the outfit under the jacket instead of adding one at the end and it stops looking like an emergency. A denim jacket is the obvious call and there's nothing wrong with obvious, though a cropped bomber sits better over a midi. Anything roughly the colour of the castle wall will look intentional in every photo taken after eight.
What you can actually carry
No prams, no carts, and nowhere to leave a bag while you go down the front. Everything you bring stays on you from midday, which makes the bag a real decision rather than an afterthought. Small, crossbody, and a strap long enough to sit across your body without swinging into someone during Overload.
Four things worth knowing before you leave the house
Dress for the drop, not the forecast
The high lands around three and you'll still be standing there at ten. Choose the evening layer first and build the rest of the outfit underneath it.
Do the sitting-down test
Sit on your kitchen floor in the whole thing for a minute — anything that rides up or gapes will do it forty more times on a lawn.
Glitter is doing more work than you think
A bit under the eyes is the cheapest way to make a t-shirt and shorts read as dressed rather than as Saturday errands. It also shows up in low light. Most of your photos will be taken in low light.
One thing nobody else has
A charity-shop belt, or an earring that doesn't match the other one. On a field of black jeans and hoops, the odd piece is what people actually remember.
The rest of the Castle season
Depot In The Castle is one Saturday in a run that keeps going into August: Biffy Clyro on the 30th, The Streets on the 31st, Sex Pistols with Frank Carter on 1 August, Two Door Cinema Club on the 2nd, Hollywood Vampires on the 14th, Jimmy Eat World on the 15th. Different crowds, same lawn, same ten-hour maths. The Streets and the Sex Pistols on consecutive nights will produce two completely different fields.
Prices and stock shift faster than a line-up does, so if something here is right, don't leave it until the week of.
