Dakota Johnson has worn roughly the same five things for years and nobody has got bored of it yet. A slip dress. A blazer a size too big. Jeans doing nothing clever. Flat shoes, always. Her stylist Kate Young once described the daytime half of it to Vogue as "Classic, minimal, elegant, with just a little bit of fashion for day", which is a generous way of saying good basics plus one deliberate choice. The deliberate choice is almost never the expensive bit, which is the whole reason this one is actually copyable.

The slip dress, worn in daylight
Suede over satin
A tan suede jacket worn open over an apple-green satin slip, cream lace trim running down the centre front, brown suede bag on the shoulder, narrow black sunglasses, hair half-up and not especially tidy. On its own that slip is an evening dress and everybody knows it. The suede is what drags it back into daylight: weight, a collar, and enough warmth to stop the green reading like a wedding outfit. Green and tan is a genuinely good pairing and a badly underused one. I would have put money on nobody wearing apple green in September, and here we are.

Flat shoes, every time
She almost never wears a heel in daylight. Ballet pumps, Mary Janes, loafers, the occasional trainer. The 2026 update is the high-vamp shape, where the toe box climbs further up the foot and lands somewhere between a ballet pump and a loafer. It does more for a straight-leg jean than the very low-cut ones, which tend to disappear under a hem. Who What Wear have been pushing burgundy as the autumn alternative to black, and against blue denim it is a better idea than it sounds.
How to borrow it
Let one piece be the interesting one
The check blazer or the green slip, not both on the same day. Everything else stays plain, which is what makes the loud piece look chosen rather than lucky.
Layer the slip dress instead of saving it
A jacket over the top in autumn. A fine knit underneath once it is properly cold. Satin kept back for occasions gets worn twice a year.
The shoe sets the register
Same dress, heel on: evening. Flat on: a Tuesday.
Pile the jewellery, do not match it
Hers are layered and deliberately mismatched, different chains, different lengths, a bead somewhere in the middle. A matching set looks like somebody else picked it out.
