Cardiff's Christmas switches on all at once this year. On Thursday 12 November the Winter Wonderland opens in the Castle grounds and on City Hall lawn, the Christmas Market chalets go up across the city centre, and the lights come on the same day. That's two very different outings in one month: a night of skating, rides and mulled wine, and an afternoon of browsing handmade stalls with a coffee going cold in your hand.

Both happen outside, in Cardiff, in November, so the brief starts with staying warm and dry. But nobody wants to spend the season looking like they're off to clear a driveway. Wrap up, then make one piece the reason the photos turn out well.

“Dress for the queue at the wheel as well as the view from the top.”

Winter Wonderland 2026: dates, sites and opening hours

Winter Wonderland runs from 12 November to Sunday 3 January, and entry is free; you pay for the things you do. It's split over two sites. Cardiff Castle has the ice rink, a novice rink, the outdoor Ice Walk, new Bavarian curling and the Tafarn bar, which is three open tepees with firepit tables. City Hall lawn has the Giant Wheel, the funfair and Sur La Piste, a two-storey ski-lodge bar doing mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Opening night is 5pm to 10pm. After that, weekdays run from 1pm and weekends from 11am, with both sites shutting at 10pm, except City Hall, which stays open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Everything is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Skating has to be booked online in advance (there are no walk-up tickets), and the rides are paid for at the kiosks with a card.

The Christmas Market: streets, hours and what's on the stalls

The Christmas Market runs from 12 November to Wednesday 23 December on St John Street, Working Street, Trinity Street and Hills Street, in wooden chalets out in the open. It trades 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays, with a late night until 7pm every Thursday in December.

It's a makers' market, so expect silver jewellery, turned wood, fused glass, ceramics, quilts and prints alongside the food and drink. Newer makers trade from the Taster Stalls on Trinity Street, which is where to look if you like owning things nobody else has. Not every stallholder is there for the whole run, so a second visit in December won't be a repeat of the first.

Rules on the ice that change what you wear

The main rink and the novice rink are under cover, so rain won't stop your session. The Ice Walk is outside and isn't covered, and the event's own advice is to bring spare socks to change into afterwards. Damp socks inside hired skates make the walk back to City Hall a long one.

Bags and phones aren't allowed on the ice, so anything you carry goes to the cloakroom, which charges per item, or stays with whoever isn't skating. Security may check bags on the way in. So carry one small bag and wear a coat with zip pockets.

    The palette

Forest green and burgundy for the photos, with oatmeal, camel and charcoal doing the rest.

The skating and Giant Wheel look: knitwear first

Build the evening outfit from the jumper out. On the ice you'll warm up fast, and a coat with one arm half off is not a look anyone pulls off on skates. A proper wool-mix jumper means the coat can come off at the rink side and you're still dressed. Cable knit is the obvious pick. A roll neck does the scarf's job when the scarf is in the cloakroom.

This is the place for the colour. A forest green or a deep burgundy knit under fairy lights photographs far better than another grey marl, and it's the bit people see once the coat is off and you're holding a mulled wine in the tepee.

Underneath, straight-leg jeans. You need to bend your knees on skates and swing your legs into a fairground car, so a skirt isn't worth it. Straight leg sits over a boot better than skinny and doesn't drag through puddles like a wide leg.

Coats: a puffer for the night, a long coat for the market

For the Winter Wonderland at night, a puffer. It's warm without much weight, and a hood beats an umbrella when you're holding a drink. For the daytime market, a long wool coat looks smarter and covers the legs while you're stood at a chalet deciding between two pairs of earrings. If you only own one, pick whichever matches the outing you're going to more.

Boots for wet grass and boardwalk

The City Hall site is a lawn and the Ice Walk is outdoors, so whatever you wear on your feet will get wet at some point. Go for boots with a grip sole and leave suede at home. Skates are hired by shoe size, from junior 8 up to adult 15, and you'll be swapping out of your boots at the rink, so make them easy to get on and off.

Black Chelsea boots work for both outings. They pull on in seconds at the skate counter and look sharp enough with a long coat on Working Street.

    Bags, hats, gloves and scarves

One small crossbody worn across the body. You'll want both hands for a hot chocolate and something to eat, and a bag that zips is the one you won't lose on the wheel. Keep it small enough to hand over at the cloakroom without a second thought.

Then the accessories, which do most of the warming and nearly all the personality. A bobble or ribbed beanie, knitted gloves you can hold a cup in, and a chunky scarf that doubles as a blanket on the wheel. If the jumper is plain, put the colour here.

    The daytime Christmas Market look

The market is a slower outing: a few hours of drifting between chalets, picking things up, putting them down, then picking them up again. A knitted jumper dress under the long wool coat keeps you warm through hours of standing about, and it's one piece to think about instead of three. Add tights, the Chelsea boots and the crossbody, and you're dressed for lunch afterwards too.

My one bit of advice is to leave room in the outfit for something you buy. A silver ring or a hand-thrown mug from the Taster Stalls tends to look better against a plain knit than a busy one.

Five things to sort before you go

    01

    Book the skating early

Ice rink tickets are sold online only and there are no walk-ups, so book before you set off.

    02

    Pack spare socks

If you're doing the Ice Walk, it's outdoors and uncovered, and the event itself tells you to bring a dry pair.

    03

    Go light on bags

Bags and phones can't go on the ice, and the cloakroom charges per item, so one small crossbody keeps it to a single fee.

    04

    Bring a card

Rides are paid for at the kiosks and the site prefers contactless.

    05

    Check the market's closing time

It shuts at 6pm most days and 5pm on Sundays, with late opening until 7pm on December Thursdays.

    Both outfits in one line

At night: a green or burgundy knit, straight jeans, a puffer, grip-sole boots, a beanie and a crossbody. By day: a jumper dress, a long wool coat, black Chelsea boots and a scarf with some colour in it. Prices and stock move fast in the run-up to Christmas, so if something catches your eye, don't leave it until the week you go.
