Best Summer Dresses Under £50, Across Every Brand

A good summer dress does one job: you put it on and you're done. It doesn't need to cost £120 to manage that, and it definitely doesn't need ironing at 8am. £50 is the ceiling here, no exceptions, and every brand from New Look to M&S gets a fair shot at making the cut.

The temptation with a budget cap is to assume you're choosing between cheap-and-boring or expensive-and-good. You're not. Cut matters more than price point once you're under £50, and that's exactly why it's worth comparing across brands instead of loyalty-shopping one retailer — New Look and M&S are cutting genuinely different silhouettes for the same money, and the one that suits you isn't always the one you'd guess.

Midi dresses: the one that never looks like it was £35

Midi is the safe pick, but safe doesn't mean boring if you get the shape right — a bit of waist definition, a print that isn't trying too hard, or plain in a colour that actually suits you. Skip anything shapeless; that's the difference between a dress and a tea towel with armholes.

Mini dresses: for when it's actually hot enough

Mini earns its place the three weeks a year the UK genuinely delivers heat. Strappy, cotton or linen-look, nothing that needs a cardigan on top or it defeats the point. Worth it if you've got somewhere to wear it; skip it if you're buying on hope alone.

Maxi and linen: the low-effort holiday pieces

This is the category that pulls double duty — pack one, wear it for four days straight, nobody notices because linen is meant to look a bit rumpled. Go for something that doesn't need a slip underneath and you've basically found the whole holiday wardrobe in one hanger.

    Find your dress by occasion

3 ways to make a £50 dress look like double that

    01

Get the length right for your height

A midi that hits mid-calf on someone 5'2" hits ankle on someone 5'9". Same dress, completely different result, so try it on rather than trusting the model's proportions.

    02

One good accessory, not five small ones

A structured bag or a proper sandal does more for a cheap dress than five bits of jewellery.

    03

Check the fabric before the print

A busy print hides a lot. It can't hide see-through fabric or a scratchy hem once you're actually wearing it, so read the material listing before you fall for the pattern — a lot of the cheapest polyester options move and photograph completely differently to how they feel on.

Prices move and stock rotates fast on anything under £50, so if something above catches your eye, don't sit on it. Compare it against everything else on so-me first though — that's the entire point of putting every brand in one place.
