An autumn wedding is a different brief to a July one. Same dress code on the invitation, same running order, but the ceremony starts at three and it is properly dark by six, and the drinks reception is on a lawn that has not dried out since the last rain. Half the day happens outside and nobody warns you which half.
The mistake is dressing for the photographs instead of the day, then spending the hour after the speeches in somebody else's coat. Cold is a styling problem, and it is far easier to solve at the buying stage than at four o'clock in a churchyard.

Brown is the one worth arguing for. Chocolate and cappuccino have been everywhere this year, and at a wedding in daylight they look deliberate in a way black sometimes does not. Burgundy is the other easy win: warm against pale skin in flat autumn light, and lovely indoors once the lamps are on.
Start with the dress, and let the hemline do the work
A midi or a maxi solves more problems than any clever layering trick will. More fabric, more coverage, no negotiating with the wind on a clifftop or in a churchyard. A mini still works if you want it to — it just comes with tights attached as a condition, which is a decision to make now rather than at eight in the morning.
Sleeves are the other lever. A long sleeve in a fabric with some weight to it does what a wrap only pretends to do, and it stays where you put it. Crepe, jacquard, ponte, velvet, anything with body. Chiffon over nothing in October is optimistic.
The coat is part of the outfit
This is the bit people skip, and it ends up in half the photographs anyway. You are in a coat for the arrival, the confetti and the walk to wherever dinner is happening. A school-run parka over occasionwear undoes the dress underneath it.
Alice Hare, the stylist behind Country & Town House's autumn wedding guide, framed it as making the coat the focal point rather than the apology, which is exactly right. A longline tailored coat in camel or something deep will carry an outfit on its own, and a velvet or brocade jacket earns its keep at an evening reception. Buy it alongside the dress rather than grabbing it on the way out.
Shoes: grass, gravel and a longer walk than you think
Stilettos and a lawn are a bad pairing, and autumn venues involve more outdoor walking than the invitation lets on: a gravel drive, then a field with the marquee at the far end of it. A block heel stays on top of the ground instead of drilling into it, and an ankle boot under a midi keeps your feet warm while it does the same job.
Suede is the seasonal favourite and it is not waterproof. Spray it, or go for leather if the forecast looks grim.
If a dress is not it
A jumpsuit is the most underrated autumn wedding answer. It covers your legs without any help from tights, and a wide-leg one in a heavy crepe is as smart as anything with a hemline. Navy and chocolate both work. Add a proper heel and something with a bit of shine at the ear.
Five things that make a cold wedding bearable
Wear the invisible layer
A thin thermal vest or bodysuit under the dress, seamless and close to it in colour. Nobody can tell, and it buys you an extra hour outdoors before you start eyeing up the marquee heaters.
Decide about tights before the morning
Sheer 15 denier is a gesture. Opaque 40 to 60 in black or chocolate is an actual layer, and with a mini it is the only thing between you and the wind. Pack a spare pair.
Ask how much of the day is outside
An outdoor ceremony plus photographs in a field is two hours in the open before anyone sits down. Whoever sent the invitation will tell you if you ask, and the answer changes what you buy.
Choose a bag you can forget about
You will be holding a drink and a phone at minimum. A shoulder or wrist strap means you keep your hands. Velvet or metallic covers the evening too, so you are not packing a second one.
A real wrap, not a token one
The tissue-weight pashmina does nothing outdoors. A heavy knit or wool one, in a colour that slightly argues with the dress, is the version that looks like a decision.
Before you buy anything
Length and sleeve first, because between them they decide how much work everything else has to do. Coat second, chosen as part of the outfit rather than after it. Shoes on a heel that will not sink.
