When you need a dress by Saturday, that's the whole appeal.
It's also the problem. Thousands of party dresses, no filter for taste. So here's where the depth actually is this summer, and what to watch for.

What ASOS is good at for party dressing
Three things, mostly. ASOS DESIGN covers the trend end fast and cheap: mesh, sequins, slinky minis, usually under £45. The marketplace labels bring the structure, so House of CB does bandage and boning, Oh Polly does corsetry, and True Decadence or Rare London will sell you a sequin maxi. The size ranges also go wider than most, with petite, tall and curve running across a lot of the own-label line.
What it's not good at is consistency. Sizing runs differently from label to label, because they are different labels: a 12 in ASOS DESIGN and a 12 in House of CB are not the same 12. Read the fit notes per product, not per basket.

Sequins, satin and sheer. Each one is having a different moment to the one it had last year.
Sequins have gone transparent, scattered over mesh rather than packed solid, which is why the sheer-sequin pieces read current instead of Christmas. Satin is the vintage slip revival: bias-cut, cowl-necked, 1930s by way of Ferragamo and Chloé. Sheer is the one worth thinking hardest about.
