A tailored wool overcoat in navy or charcoal covers formal and smart-casual. A quality leather jacket or down puffer handles casual situations. A mac or trench coat covers the transitional seasons. Three coats, most situations covered. Neutral colours, classic cuts, they don't date.

Shoulder seams at your actual shoulder line. Buttons without pulling across the chest. Sleeves to your wrist bone with a touch of shirt cuff showing. For casual jackets, slightly roomier to allow layering. If a jacket fits right, everything else follows.
